An innovative project that has transformed the North Lanarkshire landscape has won a major accolade at the COSLA Awards.
The Roundabouts Initiative from the grounds maintenance and estates team took a gold award in the category of Promoting Sustainability for an environmental improvement project that has turned nondescript roundabouts and open spaces into eyecatching features like wildflower meadows or sculptural gardens.
It has also addressed a number of sustainability issues - for example, the removal of the need for lane closures for maintenance purposes and the withdrawal of ten heavy duty tractors from the council's fleet.
The council's social work services team took a Silver Excellence Award for The NL Connection, an innovative partnership of volunteering, participatory arts and community activity designed to help people with additional support needs integrate better with their communities. The project reached the top three in the shortleet for a Gold Award.
