Many of these calls are from children who are diverting the attention of the emergency service to nuisance calls when they could be dealing more effectively with potentially serious incidents.

“The strain that malicious calls place on the emergency services can sometimes mean someone in another area being placed in real danger due to the Police, Fire or Ambulance not being able to attend. Recently we have experienced calls being made from public phone boxes by children. I would ask that all parents and guardians speak to their children and explain the risks to members of the public if they call the Police or any of the emergency services with malicious reports. We deal very seriously with malicious calls and will take action against anyone found to be making them, regardless of age. The police alone have received 247 malicious calls in this area over the last year. I have instructed the officers under my command to investigate them robustly”.
